Problem: Due a misalignment during concrete pour, the weir width was offset by 20 cm.

Solution: Two custom width Coanda Screens were manufactured.

Introduction

The engineers contacted ADENCO for their hydroelectric power project. They need an intake solution that had a minimum capacity of around 4424 lt/sec. Our engineering team came up with a solution that consisted of twenty-eight Coanda Screens.

Preliminary Coanda screen design was created over CAD. Then, certain CFD analyses were conducted to make sure that the requested capacity could be achieved with the desired bypass percentage.

Coanda Screen

ADENCO manufactured 28 Coanda Screens that had 155 lt/s capacity per screen. The team designed a suitable weir structure that had two smaller weirs with a width of 14 meters. The team also did some analysis to validate the weir design and capacity. After the analysis, it was determined that the weir design was valid. The team conducted water composition tests to determine if a special coating was needed.

Weir Construction

The first step was the construction of the weir. The weir structures used for Coanda screens are commonly made of reinforced concrete. The management of the hydroelectric power plant hired a local construction company to carry out the construction of the weir structure.

Problem

However, there was a misalignment in the weir design. Although the total width was correct, the left hand side and the right hand side of the weir were misaligned by 150 mm on one side and 800 mm on the other side.

Solution

This was a major issue because the reconstruction of the weir structure was not feasible for economical reasons. Thus, the engineering team devised a solution to create two custom Coanda Screens for the customer.

Two custom Coanda Screens that had 150 mm and 800 mm of width were manufactured to solve the problem. With the help of our research and development team, ADENCO managed to create one of the smallest Coanda Screens in the industry. With the new intake solution, the power plant has experienced minimal shutdowns and they have been very pleased with the product.
